Policy Memo - The Value-Added Tax
(Fall 2021)

This policy memo discusses the benefits and pitfalls of the value-added tax. The value-added tax is evaluated from the perspective of its adequacy, equity, efficiency, collectability and transparency. The memo argues that introducing the value-added tax in the United States could have many benefits for federal revenue. The current over reliance of the income tax has negative consequences such as a complex structure and relative inefficiency. The value-added tax would be a sustainable revenue source, and it would be more efficient, transparent, and collectable than the current income tax based system.  

Research Paper - Federal Deficit Spending: Good or Bad?
(Fall 2021)

This research paper discusses the benefits and downsides of federal deficit spending. The origins of the concept of deficit spending are rooted in the work of John Maynard Keynes. In the post-World War II era deficit spending has become commonplace, however in recent years deficit spending has increased dramatically and contributes to an ever-growing national debt. The paper further discusses the arguments for and against deficit spending. It ends by emphasizing that governments should be wary of too much national debt from deficit spending, and should create responsible long-term plans.
